Time Management Tips – 5 Favorite Keys to Efficiency
Why do some people seem to get so much accomplished while staying happy and excited about life, while others feel overwhelmed and stressed? Now we’ve added Social Media to our lives. This tool, when used properly, can bring many rewards when you learn how to manage it and your time. Below are just a few of my favorite tips collected from high achievers that manage businesses, families, Social Media and a happy and healthy lifestyle.
1) It all starts the night before- If you find yourself challenged to get up early and you’d like to add more productive hours to your day for work or pleasure, consider that it all starts the night before. Since the average person requires 8 hours of sleep, plan your bedtime by working backwards. If you desire to wake-up more naturally by 6am, be asleep by 10pm the night before. If you would like even more time for yourself, your family, the gym, creative projects and more, practice going to bed by 9pm and getting up by 5am. What you give up in late night TV time, you gain back 10-fold by enjoying more lively creative and productive days.
2) Non-Negotiable Time- When setting up your To-Do Lists for the day or week, allocate time blocks that are non-negotiable. Turn yourself into a high performance individual like the athletes that are focused and “in the zone” for short periods of time. Set a timer for 50 minutes to focus on your most important “To Do” item of the day. During that 50 minutes, commit to not taking any phone calls, text messages, checking emails or any other type of innocent distraction.
3) Prioritize You Daily To-Do List- Find what practice works best for you to create your To-Do List every day. Experiment with creating list the night before or first thing in the morning. Allow yourself to write a free-flowing list of everything that you desire to get done. Review this list and alphabetize them in their order of priority. Focus on ch0sing A, B and C. Commit to completing A, before moving onto B, then C.
4) Systems To Keep You On Track- We have so many tools available to us from “High-Tech” to “No-Tech”. Discover which system you can use consistently. A simple sheet of paper with your To Do List is far more effective than no plan at all. One example of an effective system that is built into Franklin Covey Planners for both paper and digital formats is to use the following symbols next to your To Do Items:
√ Completed
→ Forwarded
X Deleted
• In Process
O Delegated
5) High Tech- Just a few higher tech systems that can send you reminders by email or alarms on your computer or mobile device that range from free to low cost are:
Google Calendar
Microsoft Outlook Calendar
Apple iCal
MobileMe- This tool works with Macs and PC’s and integrates features virtually between multiple systems such as iCal, Address Book, Microsoft Outlook, iPhone and more.
